Most women find menopausal years pretty challenging. I have specialized in perimenopause and menopause for many years. I have found that there are many ways to help you, to rebalance and strengthen your body and alleviate the symptoms you are having.

The good news is that women report that after menopause they feel much better, recharged, ready to take on the world again, and wiser for having gone through the process.

Remember the anthropologist Margaret Mead’s quote: “There is nothing more powerful than the menopausal woman with zest!”

Designing a Plan For You

I take a comprehensive health history and look at your risk factors for breast cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. I create an individualized protocol for each woman which combines a number of therapies to help you feel better and age better. This includes dietary and lifestyle recommendations, a variety of supplements, acupuncture and Chinese Herbal formulas, plant based phytoestrogen formulas to boost your hormone levels, as well as recommendations for bio-identical hormones.

WHAT IS MENOPAUSE?

The average age is 51 for the onset of menopause. Some women report episodes of heavy bleeding leading up to menopause. Common symptoms include: insomnia, weight gain, hot flashes, mood swings and depression, memory loss, dryness of skin, eyes, and vaginal tissue, incontinence, bone loss, joint or muscle pain. Some women do not suffer with symptoms and report that their periods just stopped one day. But for most of us, finding a way to cope with these symptoms and to support your body as you are aging, is very important.

Functional Medicine Testing

When indicated, I recommend functional medicine testing to assess your baseline medical condition before commencing treatment. Testing may include hormone testing, stool or urine tests for digestive function, food sensitivities, adrenal function, immune system status, and heavy metal toxicity. As much as possible, getting your insurance to cover any testing is my first priority, and making a visit to your physician may accomplish that. For preventive care, I also recommend testing with your physician to assess your risk for diabetes, osteoporosis (DEXA Bone Density Test), and heart disease.

Treatment

I spend time with you in order to understand why you are out of balance, both with you current symptoms, as well as understanding the root condition, including your past history and genetic strengths and weaknesses.

We look at common hormonal symptoms, including heavy bleeding, hot flashes, insomnia, bladder changes, fatigue, low libido, joint pain, weight gain, mood swings, depression, anxiety, chronic stress, vaginal dryness, headaches, incontinence, insomnia, and poor memory.

We discuss roles that hormones play in menopause and aging: (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and pregnenalone). We also discuss natural plant based and bio-identical hormonal products. Hormone testing is very helpful in deciding what your body needs. Pros and cons of using hormones, which kinds of hormones will meet your needs the best, how long you should take them, and where you can get them are all issues that I regularly discuss with my patients.

If you are concerned about tumor growth, if you have a family history of breast or other cancer, or if you just don’t want to be on any hormonal support, there are many options for you to consider – herbal, supplements, adrenal support, and diet. Treatment can consist of acupuncture, herbal prescriptions, (which I tailor to the individual woman), supplements, appropriate diet, stress reduction, and moderate exercise.
